Series of Lectures on Inheriting and Promoting Fine Chinese Traditional Culture Commences

On October 25th, in order to better promote education on Fine Chinese traditional culture and facilitate the integration of traditional opera and high art into universities, the event titled "Series of Lectures on Inheriting and Promoting Fine Chinese Traditional Culture" was launched at the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This event was jointly organized by the School of Media and Communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the People's Government of Zhoupu Town, Pudong New District, Shanghai, and the Shanghai Cultural Training and Guidance Center. It was hosted by the Department of Film and Television, SMC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and co-hosted by the Cultural Service Center of Zhoupu Town, Pudong New district, and Keruisi Art Studio (Shanghai).

 

The inaugural session featured renowned Kunqu Opera performer and national first-class actress, Shen Yili, who spoke on "Kunqu Opera as an Aesthetic Way of Life." Leaders including Peng Dayin, Secretary of the Party Committee of SMC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xu Jian, executive associate dean of the SMC, Chang Heshan, deputy secretary of the Party Committee, and Qi Weiping, Party Committee Member of Zhoupu Town, Pudong New district, attended the event. The activity was moderated by Zhang Xiaoai, a graduate student from the Department of Cultural Industry Management, SMC.

 

In his welcome address, Peng Dayin emphasized that Fine Chinese traditional culture is the spiritual lifeline of the Chinese nation and an important source for nurturing the core socialist values. He expressed hope that the SMC, taking this event as an opportunity, would strengthen communication and cooperation with all participants, seize new opportunities, forge new platforms, and promote the high-quality dissemination of Fine Chinese traditional culture in the new era.

Qi Weiping delivered a speech at the event. He introduced the basic situation of Zhoupu Town and the related efforts undertaken by Zhoupu Town in inheriting and promoting Fine Chinese traditional culture, including the creation of the significant brand, the "Fu Lei Lecture Hall." He pointed out that the launch of this series of lectures will further facilitate the dissemination of “Fu Lei's culture”. He expressed hope for more interactions among all participants in the subsequent activities.

Following this, Shen Yili provided a comprehensive and accessible presentation on various aspects of Kunqu Opera, including its history, the "Four Skills and Five Techniques," makeup and costumes, representative repertoire, and experimental Kunqu Opera. She expressed that Kunqu Opera possesses a rich history, a diverse repertoire, and continually evolves, making it a precious gem in traditional Chinese art. During the event, Shen Yili and her students performed excerpts from "The Peony Pavilion - Dream Searching" and "The Peony Pavilion - Garden Stroll," showcasing their talents.

During the interactive exchange session, both teachers and students actively participated and engaged in discussions. Shen Yili shared her perspectives on how to effectively carry forward and promote Kunqu Opera, as well as strategies for keeping traditional theater vibrant and relevant.

 

This lecture not only featured theoretical explanations about Kunqu Opera but also included captivating live performances, attracting more than 6,000 participants, both online and offline.
